Ruth is a passionate advocate of singing for everyone, with an inclusive approach, sharing best practice and creating resources for teachers, choir leaders and anyone else with a passion for singing with others. She is currently developing innovative approaches to leading choirs, which empower the vocalists to be actively creative and interactive with each other and their audience. She is also aware of the positive impact of singing healthily and expressively and the sense of well-being it engenders.
Choir Community is a new community and education organisation Ruth has founded with her colleague James Cleeve to pioneer singing as a community-building tool across the ages and social spectrum to unite people in a common goal. Their aims can be summarised as:
- To foster respect, learning and friendship between everyone involved.
- To develop participants’ self-confidence, personality, musicality and leadership skills
through singing, creating and performing together.
- To promote community cohesion and inclusion by bringing together people of differing ages
and backgrounds.
The work in schools, community contexts and offices and can offer the following:
- one-off vocal skills workshops which can be tailor-made to suit the age-group or focussed on a relevant theme. These can include singing, song-writing, beat-boxing and rapping.
- short-term projects for 6 to 12 weeks, usually culminating in a public performance.
- long-term projects of up to a year, which depend on the particular aims of the project, but may include setting up a community choir, working with a particular group of people such as those experiencing deprivation or the elderly.
